What is the Need of a Face Wash?

1. Removes unwanted build-up

The most common benefit of cleansing your face using a face-wash is the removal of any unwanted debris such as dirt, pollutants, bacteria and excess oil. Removal of these impurities gives the skin a healthy and fresh appearance.

2. Hydrates the skin

Using a face wash on a regular basis helps balance the pH levels of the skin by making sure that a proper level of hydration is maintained in the skin. If the skin is dehydrated, it can look wrinkled and dull. Thus, water retention is important.

3. Deep-cleanses the pores

The tiny pores of the skin get blocked easily by dirt or sebum accumulation. It can also get blocked due to dead skin cells. Thus, using a face wash will eliminate the entire gunk from the pores, helping your skin breathe.

4. Radiant skin

Skin can look lifeless if not taken care of properly. Washing your face is thus the first step towards the radiant and glowy skin. It also helps correct the uneven texture of the skin, making the skin soft, supple and healthy.

How does a Face Wash Work?

Natural face washes are generally soap-free. This means that it is extremely mild on the skin and does not use lathering agents as in the case of artificial cleansers. Thus, during the cleansing process using a face wash, the dirt, pollutants and excess sebum are removed without actually disturbing the natural skin’s moisture barrier. There are broadly two kinds of face washes.

1. Surfactant-based

Surfactants are a particular kind of compounds mainly used to reduce surface tension between two liquids. Mild surfactant-based face washes can clearly distinguish between good lipids and bad lipids and remove all the bad lipids from the skin’s surface.

2. Solvent-based

Solvent-based cleansers help dissolve excess oil that is secreted by the sebaceous glands without harming the natural lipids that are present in the skin’s natural moisture barrier.

However, it is extremely important to make sure that you are not washing your skin with a face wash too often throughout the day. Washing it too often will lead to over-secretion of sebum by the sebaceous glands to compensate for the lack of it. This, in turn, will make your skin oily.

How to Choose Right Face wash?

Choosing the right face wash is an important step as it can either improve your skin’s quality or degrade it rapidly.

Step 1

The first step towards choosing the right cleanser is to find out what skin type you belong to. If you generally have dry skin, stay away from cleansers that use ingredients such as tea tree oil as it will further dry your skin out. On the other hand, if you belong to the oily skin category, stay away from extremely rich cleansers as they are bound to break you out.

Step 2

Sulphates and parabens are a strict no-no. These chemicals that are used in many commercially available face washes will, in the long run, damage your skin. Thus, it is generally advised to stay away from face washes that have those ingredients.

Step 3

Monitor your skin regularly to see if the face wash is improving the quality and texture of your skin. If you find the product breaking you out, discontinue it immediately.

Conclusion

Thus, by choosing the right face wash for your skin, you’re not only keeping your face clean but are also ensuring that the skin gets all the nutrients and nourishment that it needs and prevent any issues such as breakouts and pigmentation.
